Web Application

ffuf vs gobuster vs feroxbuster

Three popular content and path discovery tools. All use wordlists against HTTP targets; they differ in speed, filtering ergonomics, recursion, and scripting friendliness.

ffuf

Flexible HTTP fuzzer

Strengths

  • Multi-position FUZZ keywords (headers, paths, bodies)
  • Excellent filtering (-fc, -fs, -fw) and auto-calibration (-ac)
  • JSON/CSV output for pipelines
  • Vhost, API, and parameter fuzzing in one tool

Weaknesses

  • Recursion is less automatic than feroxbuster
  • Steeper flag surface for absolute beginners

Best when: You need precise filters, multi-wordlist fuzzing, or non-path fuzz targets.

Gobuster

Straightforward dir/dns/vhost enumerator

Strengths

  • Simple mental model and stable CLI
  • Separate modes: dir, dns, vhost, fuzz
  • Low surprise behavior for teaching

Weaknesses

  • Fewer advanced filter/auto-calibrate options than ffuf
  • Slower or less feature-rich recursion than feroxbuster

Best when: Teaching fundamentals or running a predictable directory/DNS pass.

Feroxbuster

Recursive content discovery

Strengths

  • Aggressive smart recursion by default
  • Written in Rust; very fast
  • Nice defaults for large trees
  • Configuration file support

Weaknesses

  • Can be noisier if rate limits are not set
  • Less general-purpose than ffuf for arbitrary fuzz positions

Best when: You want deep recursive discovery on a web root with speed.

Scenario pick matrix

Soft 404s and messy status codes

Auto-calibration and size/word filters clean noise quickly.

ffuf

First lab exercise for students

Few flags, clear modes, easy to reason about.

Gobuster

Deep recursive site map

Recursion and speed reduce manual follow-up.

Feroxbuster

Host header / vhost + path combos

Multi-FUZZ positions and header injection are first-class.

ffuf
Verdict: Default to ffuf for professional assessments, gobuster for teaching clarity, and feroxbuster when recursion speed matters. Many operators keep all three.
